Model History and Information: The A-10 came out of a mid-1960s requirement for a cheap, heavily armed and heavily armoured aircraft that could stay over a battlefield for a long time and kill Soviet armour. Two prototypes first flew in May 1972, the type was chosen over the competing YA-9 in January 1973, and deliveries began in March 1976. The airframe was designed around its gun, a seven-barrel 30 mm rotary cannon firing at up to 3,900 rounds a minute, and the pilot sits in a titanium bath. It is the only production aircraft the United States Air Force has operated built solely for close air support.
