Model History and Information: Aircraft 165001, coded '01', is an AV-8B+ Harrier II Plus flown by US Marine Attack Squadron 214 (VMA-214), the 'Black Sheep'. The squadron was formed at Ewa Field, Hawaii, on 1 July 1942, and its most famous commander, Major Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington, became the first US fighter pilot to surpass the First World War victory total of Eddie Rickenbacker before receiving the Medal of Honor. This scheme, which marks Boyington's name on the canopy rail, was applied for the squadron's 75th anniversary. VMA-214 flew the AV-8B+ for 33 years before re-equipping with the F-35B Lightning II in 2022.
