Model History and Information: This SPAD S.XIII, serial S.7714, was flown by Captain Robert Soubiran, commanding officer of the 103rd Aero Squadron, United States Army Air Service, in France in 1918. French-born, Soubiran had travelled to France at his own expense in 1914 to join the French Foreign Legion before transferring to French aviation and then to the Lafayette Escadrille. He later moved into the 103rd Pursuit Squadron following the United States' entry into the war, rising to command the unit and logging more than 400 hours of combat flying. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm for his attacks on German observation balloons.
