VMA-231, known as the Ace of Spades, was first commissioned in 1919 and is the Marine Corps' oldest flying squadron. It adopted the Harrier II in 1985. On 29 May 2025 the squadron flew its final AV-8B flight at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and held a ceremony to mark the occasion ahead of its scheduled deactivation in September 2025.
