The Bulldogs trace their origin to Marine Fighting Squadron 223, commissioned on 1 May 1942 at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, Hawaii, and began flying the AV-8B in 1987. On 3 June 2026 the squadron held a sundown ceremony at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, marking the end of nearly 40 years of AV-8B operations.
