Model History and Information: The Bf 109E, or Emil, including the E-3 subvariant, was the Luftwaffe's principal single-engine fighter during the 1940 campaigns. III. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 52 was formed in March 1940 and equipped with the Bf 109E, operating from bases in occupied France during the Battle of Britain before being transferred eastward later that year. Sorties over the English Channel and southern England consisted of bomber escort and fighter sweeps against RAF Fighter Command. Yellow markings with a numeral identified an aircraft within its Staffel.
