Model History and Information: The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was a twin-engined Zerstoerer, or heavy fighter, also used as a fighter-bomber and escort. Zerstoerergeschwader 26, identified by the '3U' Geschwader code, operated the type from the war's opening campaigns. During 1941 its III. Gruppe, which comprised the 7th through 9th Staffeln, deployed to the Mediterranean, flying from Sicily against the besieged island of Malta and supporting Axis forces in the North African campaign. The E-2 was a fighter-bomber subvariant of the Bf 110E series. Aircraft in this theatre typically escorted bombers and attacked airfields, shipping and ground targets.
