Model History and Information: The BMW i8 was a plug-in hybrid sports car built from 2014 to 2020, notable as the first BMW production model powered by a three-cylinder engine. It paired a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear wheels with an electric motor driving the front axle, for a combined output of around 369 hp. Its lightweight carbon-fibre passenger cell and upward-opening doors set it apart from other hybrids of its era, and BMW positioned it as a technology showcase for the brand's electrification efforts. A Roadster version followed in 2018, and BMW built roughly 20,000 i8s in total before ending production.
