British SAS 1/4-Ton WILLYS JEEP with Vickers K Machine Gun

Model History and Information: The Special Air Service was founded in July 1941 as "L" Detachment by David Stirling to raid Axis targets behind the lines during the North African campaign. Early operations relied on the Long Range Desert Group for transport, but from late 1942 the unit received its own American-built quarter-ton 4x4 jeeps. Crews fitted them with Vickers K machine guns salvaged from obsolete aircraft, mounting single and twin guns on pivots. Moving in fast columns, raiders drove onto enemy airfields and destroyed parked aircraft with massed fire before withdrawing. These attacks accounted for large numbers of Axis warplanes destroyed on the ground. The heavily armed desert jeep became a defining instrument of early SAS raiding tactics.
