Model History and Information: The Special Black Edition repeats the Micro Constructors four-pack idea with every machine finished in black. According to the card printed on the pack, Pack A contains a Cat 315D L excavator with cleanup bucket, a Cat 906 wheel loader, a Cat 770 off-highway truck and a Cat 272C skid steer loader. Pack B contains a Cat 315D L excavator with grapple, a Cat D5G XL track-type tractor, a Cat 420E backhoe loader and a Cat 299C compact track loader with pallet forks. Each set of four sits on a long interlocking landscape base under a clear cover. Among the full-size subjects, Caterpillar built the 906 compact wheel loader to the same standards as its larger loaders and developed the 770 for construction, mining and quarry work.
