Model History and Information: Introduced by Citroën in 1957, the ID was a simplified, lower-cost companion to the DS launched two years earlier. It shared the DS body and 1,911 cc engine but produced less power, roughly 69 hp against the DS's 75 hp. To cut cost, the ID used manual steering, a conventional clutch and gearchange, and a simplified braking system instead of the DS's fully hydraulic controls, while keeping the hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension. Styled by Flaminio Bertoni, the aerodynamic saloon sat on a 3,124 mm wheelbase. It offered a price saving of more than 25 percent over the DS, widening the range to buyers in a France still recovering economically after the war.
