Model History and Information: This diecast model depicts Curtiss P-40N Warhawk 42-104977, an airframe flown in New Guinea by 1st Lt. Joel Dixon Thorvaldson of the 8th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, Fifth Air Force. Thorvaldson scored three aerial victories in it before a Japanese A6M Zero shot the aircraft down near Finschafen on September 13, 1943. The wreck lay in the jungle until an Australian recovery team retrieved it in 2005; Precision Aerospace in Wangaratta, Australia, rebuilt it to flying condition, and it returned to the air on September 12, 2008. Later converted into a two-seat trainer and based in the United States, the aircraft now flies at airshows under the name “American Dream,” carrying the shark-mouth paint scheme and the number 55 reproduced on this model.
