Model History and Information: Caterpillar introduced the current D7E at Conexpo in March 2008 and put it into service in 2009, giving the medium dozer a diesel-electric drivetrain in place of a mechanical transmission: a Cat C9.3 engine, rated at 235 horsepower, drives a generator that supplies a pair of AC electric drive motors. Caterpillar projected the D7E would move 25 percent more material per gallon of fuel and deliver 10 percent greater productivity than the D7R Series II it followed, while also returning to a flat-track undercarriage rather than the elevated-sprocket design used elsewhere in the D7 line.
