Model History and Information: Double-deck (bilevel) passenger coaches carry two full levels of seating within a single car, allowing a train to carry up to about twice as many passengers as a same-length single-level car without lengthening the train or adding services. This makes them useful on routes where platform length or timetable slots limit capacity, and they are widely used on regional and commuter networks in Germany, France (including TGV Duplex high-speed trains), Australia and North America. Because the design places doors at an intermediate level with stairs leading up and down to the two seating decks, or drops the lower floor between the wheels, bilevel stock needs a generous loading gauge and is largely absent from networks such as Britain's, where the gauge is too small. The colourful graffiti-style graphics on this model reflect liveries used by some regional double-deck fleets.
