Douglas A-1J "TINY TIM" AF42-056, 602nd S.O.S, Thailand, 1969
Product Dimensions: 6.47 x 8.34 x 2.61 in.
Model History and Information: The 602nd Special Operations Squadron flew the piston-engined Douglas A-1 Skyraider from Nakhon Phanom in Thailand, having taken that designation on 1 August 1968. Under the radio call sign Sandy, its aircraft escorted rescue helicopters into hostile territory during combat search and rescue missions: the Skyraider's endurance, slow-speed handling and heavy ordnance load suited the task far better than jet aircraft could. The squadron operated single-seat A-1H and A-1J models alongside the side-by-side A-1E and A-1G variants. Its commander, Lieutenant Colonel William A. Jones III, received the Medal of Honor for a rescue mission flown in September 1968. The named serial, unit, date and finish on this model identify the individual historical subject represented: Douglas A-1J "TINY TIM" AF42-056, 602nd S.O.S, Thailand, 1969.
