Model History and Information: The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a Mach-2 fighter-bomber that flew the bulk of early Vietnam War strike missions and later specialized in suppressing enemy air defenses. The two-seat F model first flew in June 1963; 143 were built with dual controls, a lengthened forward fuselage and a taller fin, remaining fully combat-capable and forming the basis of the two-seat Wild Weasel conversions. After withdrawal from front-line duty, surviving airframes served with Air National Guard units into the early 1980s, before the type was retired in 1984. Georgia's 128th squadron operated the Thunderchief during that final Guard period at Dobbins.
