Model History and Information: Australia ordered twenty-four F-111Cs in 1963, but technical problems delayed delivery until the first six reached RAAF Base Amberley on 1 July 1973. Long-winged and strengthened for Australian requirements, the type became the country's principal strike aircraft and earned the affectionate nickname Pig for its long nose and terrain-following flying. A8-125 was the first to touch down at Amberley, and it served with No. 6 Squadron, which marked its ninetieth anniversary in 2007. The same aircraft closed the story: on 3 December 2010 it made the final F-111 landing at Amberley, retiring a fleet replaced by the F/A-18F Super Hornet.
