Model History and Information: The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a carrier-based, variable-sweep, twin-engine fleet-defense fighter that entered US Navy service in 1974, carrying the AWG-9 radar and the long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missile. VF-124, based at NAS Miramar, served as the Pacific Fleet's Tomcat Fleet Replacement Squadron, training aircrews to operate the type. During 1976 many US military aircraft wore special red, white and blue markings for the nation's Bicentennial, and Tomcats received such commemorative schemes. The F-14A was the initial production variant, powered by TF30 engines, and remained a primary Navy interceptor until later variants entered service and the type retired in 2006.
