Model History and Information: Fighter Squadron 1, the Wolfpack, was established on 14 October 1972 at NAS Miramar and, together with VF-2, became one of the first two operational squadrons to fly the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, receiving its first aircraft on 1 July 1973. Wearing a red wolf's-head badge, the squadron joined Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard USS Enterprise, and in April 1975 its Tomcats flew top cover over Saigon during Operation Frequent Wind, the type's first operational use. The big, swing-wing F-14 gave the fleet a long-range interceptor armed with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile. This aircraft carries the Wolfpack's markings.
