Model History and Information: The Grumman F-14A Tomcat was a two-seat, swing-wing carrier fighter that first flew on 21 December 1970. Two Pratt & Whitney TF30 turbofans powered the F-14A, and it carried AIM-54 Phoenix missiles for long-range intercepts. VF-84, the Jolly Rogers, flew the F-14A from early 1976 and made its first Tomcat cruise aboard USS Nimitz in 1977. From September 1979 to May 1980 the squadron deployed with Carrier Air Wing 8 on Nimitz, which was sent to the Indian Ocean during the Iran hostage crisis and returned home on 26 May 1980. The squadron also appeared in the 1980 film The Final Countdown.
