Model History and Information: In the early 1980s the US Air Force turned the F-15 Eagle into an anti-satellite launcher, pairing the fighter with the ASM-135 missile. The jet would climb steeply and release the missile high in the atmosphere, letting a small kinetic vehicle streak on into space to ram its target. The programme planned to arm twenty F-15As of the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at McChord Air Force Base, Washington, and the 48th at Langley. The concept was proven on 13 September 1985 when a specially assigned Eagle destroyed a defunct satellite, the only successful air-launched anti-satellite intercept ever flown. Aircraft 76-0111 wears the 318th's markings with the ASM-135.
