Two prototypes were built: PAV-1, painted charcoal grey and nicknamed Gray Ghost, and PAV-2, serial 87-0801. The design combined a diamond wing, a V-tail and shielded exhaust troughs to reduce radar and infrared signature, and demonstrated supercruise near Mach 1.6 over roughly fifty flights. In April 1991 the Air Force selected the competing Lockheed YF-22, and both airframes later passed to NASA before entering museum collections.
