Model History and Information: The 302nd Squadron was announced in 2017 as the first Japan Air Self-Defense Force unit to transition to the F-35A, replacing the F-4EJ Kai Phantom II. The squadron ceased F-4 operations in March 2019 and relocated to Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, where it forms part of the 3rd Air Wing. Japan is a major F-35 operator, having selected the type to modernize its fighter force and strengthen air defense. The aircraft provides stealth, advanced sensors and networked situational awareness.
