Model History and Information: Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 224, the Fighting Bengals, flew its final F/A-18D Hornet sortie on 28 April 2025 and was redesignated from VMFA(AW)-224 to VMFA-224 at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort on 27 June 2025, closing more than three decades of Hornet operations. The squadron belongs to Marine Aircraft Group 31 within the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The F-35B is the short take-off and vertical landing version of the Lightning II, able to fly from amphibious assault ships and from expeditionary airstrips shorter than two thousand feet, which is why the Marine Corps built its expeditionary basing concept around the type.
