Model History and Information: The USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, flew the F-4E Phantom II as their demonstration mount through the early 1970s, the largest and heaviest jet the team ever operated. The No. 1 aircraft belonged to the squadron commander and team leader, who flew the point of the diamond formation. Finished in the team's red, white and blue national colors, the Phantoms performed precision formation passes and solo maneuvers at shows across North America. This model depicts the leader's flagship during the closing seasons of the Phantom era, before reduced flying and heavy fuel demands pushed the team toward a smaller aircraft for 1974.
