Model History and Information: The F-5 was designed as a light, cheap fighter for allied air forces rather than for the United States, but in 1965 the Air Force borrowed twelve F-5A airframes to see what such an aircraft could do in a real war. The evaluation, called Skoshi Tiger, modified them with a refuelling probe, armour around the cockpit and engines and updated avionics, redesignating them F-5C, and sent them to Bien Hoa and Da Nang. They flew more than three thousand sorties before the trial ended in March 1966, and were judged about as capable as the F-100 in the ground attack role, with shorter range. The named serial, unit, date and finish on this model identify the individual historical subject represented: F-5A Freedom Fighter 38381, USAF, 1960s.
