Model History and Information: In October 1965 the US Air Force launched a combat evaluation of the Freedom Fighter in Southeast Asia under the code name Skoshi Tiger. Twelve F-5As were modified with an in-flight refueling probe, additional armor and revised gunsights, a configuration that led to the F-5C designation. Initially flown by the 4503rd Tactical Fighter Squadron from Bien Hoa, the aircraft carried out thousands of ground-attack and escort sorties, with operations continuing under the 10th Fighter Squadron (Commando). The trial demonstrated the type's simplicity and serviceability in a war zone. Surviving aircraft were later handed to the South Vietnamese, and the evaluation shaped export confidence in the design.
