Model History and Information: Fighter Squadron Composite 111 is a United States Navy Reserve adversary unit based at Naval Air Station Key West in Florida. It was formed in January 2006 as a Key West detachment of VFC-13 and became VFC-111 that November, taking the Sun Downers name, insignia and traditions from the earlier fighter squadron VF-111, which had flown Crusaders and Phantoms in Vietnam and later Tomcats. Its reserve pilots are experienced instructors who fly as the opposing force, giving fleet strike fighter, Marine and Air Force crews dissimilar air combat training against a small, agile aircraft that behaves nothing like their own.
