Model History and Information: During the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis the Republic of China Air Force became the first foreign operator of the AIM-9 Sidewinder, receiving the missile from the United States in 1958 to offset the higher ceiling and speed of the MiG-17s it faced. On 24 September 1958 its F-86 Sabres fired them in combat over the strait and scored the first air-to-air kills achieved by a guided missile in history. Accounts published in the West credit ROCAF Sabres with thirty-one MiGs over roughly six weeks of fighting, for the loss of two of their own.
