Model History and Information: Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23, the Salty Dogs, is a US Navy flight-test unit at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, established in 1995. Using tail code SD and the radio callsign Salty Dog, it conducts research, testing and evaluation of tactical aircraft, including Hornet and Super Hornet variants, covering flying qualities, propulsion, ordnance compatibility and shipboard suitability. The 'Green Hornet' name is associated with US Navy Super Hornet alternative-fuel demonstration testing conducted at Patuxent River, in which a two-seat F/A-18F flew on a biofuel blend. BuNo 165875 is a two-seat F/A-18F of the type used in such test and evaluation work at the station.
