Model History and Information: The F4U Corsair's distinctive bent wing was driven by the need to accommodate a very large propeller, and the resulting fighter developed into a formidable carrier and land-based combat aircraft. Captain Philip C. DeLong flew with VMF-312 during the Korean War. BuNo 97380 aboard USS Bataan in 1951 represents the Corsair after World War II, when a piston-engined fighter was still providing vital Marine close-air-support capability in Korea. DeLong, a Corsair ace in the Pacific in World War II, went on to fly the jet-powered F9F Panther in Korea, giving him combat experience spanning both the piston-engined and early jet eras of Marine Corps aviation.
