Model History and Information: Before he flew in space, John Glenn was a Marine Corps fighter pilot. He joined his squadron in July 1943, converted onto the F4U Corsair that September and moved with the unit to the Marshall Islands in June 1944, flying roughly sixty combat missions from Roi-Namur and Kwajalein against Japanese positions in the campaign, including attacks on anti-aircraft batteries at Maloelap. He came home with two Distinguished Flying Crosses and ten Air Medals at the end of his one-year tour in February 1945, and went on to Cherry Point and then to test flying at Patuxent River.
