Model History and Information: During its inaugural 1946 season the US Navy's Blue Angels demonstration team transitioned from the Grumman Hellcat to the Grumman Bearcat, adopting the F8F-1 on 25 August 1946 and debuting the diamond formation shortly afterward. By the close of the year the team was flying four Bearcats, their tails numbered one through four. Precision close-formation aerobatics were the hallmark of the display, performed in tight groupings to showcase naval aviation. The Bearcat's light weight and powerful radial engine made it well suited to this role. Serving the team from 1946 until 1949, the type carried the unit through its formative seasons before the arrival of jet equipment.
