Model History and Information: The Grumman F8F Bearcat was the last and one of the finest piston-engined fighters the US Navy took to sea, a small, light aircraft wrapped around a powerful radial engine for exceptional climb and speed. It arrived too late for the Second World War but served in the immediate post-war fleet. VF-61, the Jolly Rogers, flew the improved F8F-2, with its taller tail and four 20 mm cannon, during 1949, at the very moment carrier aviation was crossing from propellers to jets. The squadron traced its lineage to the wartime VF-17 and carried the famous skull-and-crossbones. This model wears its markings on Bearcat 121717.
