Model History and Information: The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II was developed after the Vietnam War as a dedicated close air support aircraft, built around the GAU-8 Avenger 30 mm rotary cannon and armored to withstand ground fire while attacking tanks and other armored vehicles. It entered U.S. Air Force service in 1977 and saw extensive combat in the 1991 Gulf War, later flying missions over Afghanistan and Iraq. This model carries the shark-mouth nose art and “FT” tail code of the 75th Fighter Squadron, part of the 23rd Wing at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, one of the only U.S. Air Force units authorized to wear that historic marking. After decades of service, the Air Force has moved toward retiring the A-10 fleet, a plan Congress has repeatedly delayed.
