Model History and Information: The British Army had rejected the idea of putting the 17-pounder into a Sherman, and two officers pushed the conversion through anyway. It went into production early in 1944, in time for Normandy: 342 had been delivered to Montgomery's 21st Army Group by the end of May, and close to four hundred were converted by the end of the campaign. The gun could reliably penetrate the frontal armour of Panthers and Tigers, which nothing else in British or American service could do, so German crews were told to shoot at the long-barrelled Shermans first. Fitting the breech meant deleting the co-driver.
