Model History and Information: Wheel loaders (also called front loaders) use a hydraulically operated bucket mounted on a pair of lift arms at the front of the machine to scoop, carry and load loose material such as soil, gravel, sand or demolition debris into trucks or onto piles. Most wheel loaders steer by articulating in the middle, bending the front and rear halves of the chassis toward each other; this design, in use since the 1950s, lets a machine with large wheels turn in a tight radius despite its size. On construction sites and in quarries they typically work together with excavators and dump trucks: the loader fills trucks or hoppers, or clears and stockpiles material, while other machines dig or haul it further.
