Model History and Information: Bureau number 166856 was one of the early EA-18G Growlers, serving as a flight-test and evaluation airframe. The Growler is the US Navy's carrier-based electronic-attack aircraft, developed from the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet to replace the EA-6B Prowler, with its electronic-warfare suite supplied by Northrop Grumman. In 2008 this aircraft flew with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9), the "Vampires," based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California. VX-9 conducts operational test and evaluation of Navy and Marine Corps tactical aircraft, weapons, sensors and electronic-warfare systems, and helped validate the Growler ahead of its fleet introduction in 2009. In this period 166856 was photographed carrying jamming pods, external fuel tanks and anti-radiation missiles.
