Model History and Information: Wearing modex 555, Growler bureau number 168771 flies with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9), the "Vampires," at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California. VX-9 was formed in 1993 from the merger of VX-4 and VX-5, uses the tail code XE, and conducts operational test and evaluation of US Navy and Marine Corps tactical aircraft, weapons, sensors and electronic-warfare systems. Alongside the Growler, the squadron operates F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and the F-35C Lightning II. In this test-and-evaluation role, its EA-18Gs support the assessment of new electronic-attack hardware, jamming systems and mission software for the fleet. The EA-18G itself is developed from the F/A-18F Super Hornet as the Navy's carrier-based airborne electronic-attack aircraft.
