Model History and Information: The A6M2b, or Navy Type 0 Model 21, was among the most produced early versions of the Imperial Japanese Navy's carrier fighter, with roughly 740 built by Mitsubishi and a further 800 by Nakajima. It introduced folding wingtips to ease carrier stowage and offered long range through wing tanks and a droppable centreline tank. Armament comprised two wing-mounted 20 mm cannon and two cowling machine guns. Early in the war the Zero was prized for its exceptional manoeuvrability and range, though it lacked pilot armour and self-sealing tanks. This example wears the markings of the 261st Naval Air Group, a land-based fighter unit associated with Kagoshima in this period.
