Model History and Information: Robert T. Smith resigned his commission in July 1941 to join Claire Chennault's American Volunteer Group, the unit that became known as the Flying Tigers, flying for the Chinese Nationalist air force. By November 1941 the group was training in Burma on Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 fighters, known to the British as Tomahawks, and was organised into three squadrons: the Adam and Eves, the Panda Bears and the Hell's Angels, of which Smith flew with the third. He saw combat over Rangoon from 23 December 1941 and finished his time with the group credited with close to nine Japanese aircraft destroyed.
