Model History and Information: Arthur V. Clowes flew Hurricanes with No. 1 Squadron through the fighting in France and the Battle of Britain, received a commission in September 1940 and had reached flight lieutenant by that November. He is best remembered for the wasp motif he painted himself on both sides of his aircraft's nose at the end of August 1940, adding a stripe to the insect's body for each enemy aircraft he shot down; his final tally was at least twelve. The marking became one of the best known personal emblems of the period. Clowes remained in the service after the war until an accident in 1943 cost him an eye and ended his flying career. The named serial, unit, date and finish on this model identify the individual historical subject represented: Hawker Hurricane Mk.I "Battle of Britain" flown by F/L Arthur "Darky" V.
