Model History and Information: The Ilyushin Il-10 developed from the Il-1 armored fighter project of 1943, redesigned in early 1944 into a two-seat ground-attack aircraft to succeed the Il-2 Sturmovik. It kept the Il-2’s armored-hull concept but used all-metal stressed-skin construction and a roughly 2,000-hp Mikulin AM-42 engine, reaching about 550 km/h, over 100 km/h faster than its predecessor. Il-10s entered combat on 15 April 1945 with the 571st Assault Aviation Regiment over Berlin and Prague, then saw action against Japanese forces in Manchuria that August. Czechoslovakia’s Avia works later built about 1,200 more as the B-33. North Korea’s Il-10s opened the 1950 Korean War but were largely destroyed within weeks by U.S. F-51 and F-80 fighters.
