Model History and Information: The Shenyang J-16 is a twin-engine, tandem two-seat multirole strike fighter developed from the Flanker family, drawing on the earlier J-11 and the Su-30MKK. Built by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, it is classed as a 4.5-generation aircraft and carries the NATO reporting name Flanker-N. The People's Liberation Army Air Force received an initial regiment of the type in April 2014, with the aircraft entering service around 2015 and being publicly revealed at the 2017 parade marking the PLA's ninetieth anniversary. It is equipped for both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions and can employ long-range air-to-air missiles. A dedicated electronic-warfare derivative, the J-16D, has since been fielded.
