King Tiger Henschel Turret Heavy Tank s.Pz.Abt. 509 Eastern Front 1944
Product Dimensions: 5.62 x 2.05 x 1.69 in.
Model History and Information: The Tiger II combined a long 8.8 cm KwK 43 with heavy sloped armour and was intended to overmatch Allied tanks at long range. Its enormous mass, fuel use and mechanical demands limited how effectively the vehicle could be employed, especially during Germany's 1944-45 retreat. The usual collector term Henschel turret in fact designates the later production turret, which Krupp, not Henschel, designed for both the early and the late versions. The 509th Heavy Panzer Battalion received forty-five Tiger IIs in December 1944 and used them the following month in the failed Konrad III relief operation near Budapest, Hungary, where forty of the forty-five were lost.
