Model History and Information: The Leopard 1 was West Germany's first post-war main battle tank, produced by Krauss-Maffei as general contractor. The first series vehicle reached the troops on 9 September 1965, and by February 1970 four production lots totalling 1,845 tanks had been completed for the Bundeswehr, with a fifth and sixth lot following in the 1970s. Panzerbataillon 153 was formed under that designation in Koblenz in 1959 and belonged to Panzerbrigade 15. After the first four lots were delivered, the German Army launched an upgrade programme that led to the Leopard A1, adding a gun stabilization system, armoured skirts along the hull and a thermal sleeve on the barrel.
