Model History and Information: The Leopard 1 was West Germany's first post-war main battle tank, produced by Krauss-Maffei, with the first series vehicle delivered to the Bundeswehr in September 1965. The Royal Netherlands Army ordered 468 tanks from the fourth production series as a partial replacement for its Centurions, and the first was handed over at the end of 1969; the Dutch vehicles were built between October 1969 and March 1972. The 41st Tank Battalion, permanently stationed at Bergen-Hohne in West Germany from 1963, operated the Leopard 1 from 1971 until 1984, when it converted to the Leopard 2. During the 1980s the Dutch Leopard fleet went through an extensive improvement programme before the type was retired after the end of the Cold War.
