Model History and Information: The M103 was the last heavy tank fielded by the United States. Chrysler built about 300 as the T43E1 in 1953-1954, with 80 going to the Army, which rebuilt 74 to the improved M103 standard, and 220 to the Marine Corps, later upgraded to M103A1 and then M103A2. The A2 conversion, carried out from 1964, replaced the original gasoline engine with the diesel used in the M60, extending road range to roughly 295 miles. Its 120 mm M58 gun was built to outrange and defeat the heaviest Soviet tanks. The Army fielded a single M103 battalion in West Germany from January 1958, while Marine Corps M103s served stateside and, briefly, at Guantanamo Bay during the 1962 missile crisis. The type left service in the early 1970s as the M60 took over the heavy anti-armor role.
