Model History and Information: The Tank Urban Survival Kit is a package of modifications developed for the M1 Abrams after urban fighting in Iraq exposed how vulnerable a tank built for open-country tank battles could be in a city, where fire comes from rooftops, alleys and below. It adds reactive armour to the flanks, a remote weapon station so the commander can fight buttoned up, and protection for the loader's position. In August 2006 General Dynamics received an Army order for 505 kits. The mine plow mounted on the front clears explosives and rubble from a route so that the vehicles behind can pass.
