Model History and Information: The M40 Gun Motor Carriage was a United States self-propelled artillery vehicle that mounted the 155 mm "Long Tom" gun on a widened, lengthened Sherman-type chassis to provide mobile corps-level firepower. Developed late in the Second World War to replace the earlier M12, its prototype was designated T83 and standardized as the M40 in March 1945. A single pilot vehicle saw action in the European Theatre in 1945 with the 991st Field Artillery Battalion. Production by the Pressed Steel Car Company reached 311 vehicles before the war's end. The type went on to serve during the Korean War and with several allied armies, remaining in use into the early 1950s.
